My Story
Having been born in Namibia, spent my younger years in South Africa, and now residing in New Zealand, I have experienced vast differences in the landscape and wildlife that surrounds us. I have always been interested in the arts, being in the bush tramping, and generally working with my hands. When I started taking an interest in photography as a teenager with a little instamatic Kodak camera, my father bought me an Olympus OM-1 camera and a Vivatar zoom lens. I was hooked taking lots of slides but with no idea of what makes a good picture or how to really work the camera. Then along came military training, an engineering profession, marriage and kids (proud father of two incredible girls - all credit to my beautiful wife), the camera was put down to make room for life as slides became too expensive for the home budget. But now with the girls grown up and my career in its twilight years, my photography passion is back, and with a lot more knowledge of how to use a camera and what makes a good photo.
I am most at peace when I am surrounded by nature, or when spending hours in silence trying to capture "the moment" with wildlife. I have also come to appreciate that no day is the same even when sitting in the same place day after day. We allow life to pass too quickly and seldom stop, as they say, to smell the roses. So, I hope the images I have captured will allow you to see and enjoy what I have been able to experience when I have stopped and taken in the beauty that God has given us.
My approach is to keep it simple. I don't over manipulate my photos beyond minor editing or cleaning of dust spots, much of what would have been undertaken in a darkroom to enhance or bring attention to the subject. So, the colours you see, the subjects or focus points in my photos are as close to what I experienced when capturing the scene. But sometimes rules are broken if it makes for a better story.
